Samma psykologiska mekanismer bland extremister

I ett pressmeddelande från Uppsala Universitet presenteras nya forskningsresultat från European Journal of Social Psychology. De nya resultaten presenterar ett samband bakom de psykologiska mekanismerna hos personer och deras fientlighet gentemot en främlingsgrupp. Studien kan förklara varför västerländska extremister ansluter sig till grupper som förföljer muslimer samt hur vissa muslimer stöttar bombdåd mot västerländska mål. De faktorer som kan bidra till våldshandlingar beror på huruvida man uppfattar en annan grupp som ett hot mot ens egna värderingar och kultur. Exempelvis kan icke-muslimska västerlänningar som upplever muslimer som ett hot mot ens egna värderingar och kultur ansluta sig till extremistgrupper och även förfölja muslimer. Forskningsresultaten har utförts av forskare från Danmark, Norge, USA och Sverige och är baserade på delstudier bland olika grupper och kontexter. Studierna utgick från intervjuer med muslimer och icke-muslimer om deras attityder gentemot den andra gruppen. Anmärkningsvärt i studien var att faktorer som rädsla för krig och materiellt tillstånd inte spelade lika stor roll.
