Enligt shiamuslimsk historieskrivning utsåg Sändebudet Muhammad (fvvmh&hf) Imām ʿAlī (fvmh) till sin ställföreträdare. Sändebudet (fvvmh&hf) hade själv fostrat honom och Imām ʿAlī (fvmh) excellerade som bland annat mystiker, retoriker, vägledare och statsman.
De av hans predikningar och skrifter som finns bevarade vittnar om hans visdom, storsinthet och ädelmod.

Emellertid fanns det krafter som ville annat och Imām ʿAlī (fvmh) tillträdde som kalif först 25 år efter Sändebudets (fvvmh&hf) död. Han ärvde ett välde som på många sätt var satt ur kurs, varför han genast initierade ett reformarbete. Under denna tid hade han endast ett fåtal nära vänner. Bland dem intog Mālik al-ʾAshtar en särställning. När Imām ʿAlī (fvmh) fick bud om en rebellarmé på väg mot den egyptiska provinsen utsåg han Mālik al-ʾAshtar till sin guvernör i området. Innan Imām ʿAlī (fvmh) sände honom till Egypten överlämnade han ett brev med instruktioner.
Mālik al-ʾAshtar fick aldrig möjlighet att tillämpa instruktionerna – han lönnmördades innan han nådde fram till provinshuvudstaden. Även Imām ʿAlī (fvmh) skulle komma att lönnmördas, efter endast fyra år som kalif. Dock har brevet – i vilket vi får möta Imām ʿAlī (fvmh) som den visionär han var – överlevt till våra dagar. Med brevet har även hans rättviseetos nått oss.

Det är inte svårt att förstå varför många av Imām ʿAlīs (fvmh) samtida spjärnade emot hans reformer – och, i förlängningen, emot honom.
